Brazilian police have accused American swimmers of lying about a robbery

The four American swimmers who claimed the robbery in Rio de Janeiro were not actually victims of the crime, but, on the contrary, damaged the door at the gas station in the city themselves, Brazilian BBC police said.

According to local media, the incident occurred early on Sunday morning at a gas station near the Olympic Village.

Athletes accidentally broke down the door to the toilet, and then argued with the guard and the owner of the gas station, who demanded damage. As a result, according to sources, the swimmers paid a certain amount of money, but there was no robbery.

The Brazilian television channel Globo showed fragments of recordings from surveillance cameras, which show how athletes are sitting at a gas station with their hands up.

On Thursday night, US Olympic team members Jack Conger and Gunnar Benz were removed from a flight at Rio airport as they boarded a plane to the United States. Another swimmer, James Fagen, also remained in Brazil.

The judge ordered the confiscation of athletes' passports for further investigation.

The fourth person involved in the case, Olympic champion Ryan Lochte, returned to the United States on Monday.

Earlier, lawyer Lochte told NBC television that the police did not prohibit the swimmer from leaving Brazil. The athlete himself insists that he told the truth about the robbery.

Last week, swimmers reported that they were robbed by criminals disguised as policemen when they were taking a taxi to the Olympic Village.

However, the Rio police on Wednesday said that the testimony of swimmers does not correlate with the recordings of surveillance cameras. Police also reported inconsistencies in the testimony of athletes.
