Arab for the first time in history received an award for saving Jews during the Holocaust
For the first time in history, Israel rewarded an Arab for saving the Jews during the Holocaust.
The contribution to the rescue of Jews from the Nazi regime of the Egyptian Mohamed Helmi was recognized, reports Rtvi.
He moved to Berlin in the 1922 year, during the Nazi regime, he himself had to face discrimination more than once: Helmi lost his job in the hospital and was arrested by the police twice.
From 1941 to 1945, he hid a family of Jews from the Gestapo — his patient Anna Boros, her mother, stepfather, and grandmother.
Even during his lifetime, Helmi received an award for the courage of the mayor of West Berlin and the Nobel Peace Prize winner Willy Brandt. In 1982, the doctor died in Berlin.
In Israel, the story of Helmi was learned in 2013 year. Then the International Institute for the Study of the Holocaust Yad Vashem included the name of an Arab doctor in the list "Righteous among the Nations". This title is given to non-Jews, who, during the years of the Nazi occupation of Europe, saved Jews by risking their lives.
The presentation of the award was delayed because Helmi’s descendants could not find for a long time.
In October, the Ambassador of Israel to Germany Jeremy Issakharov presented the nephew of the Egyptian physician Naser Kotbi with a personalized medal and diploma in October 2017 in Berlin.
