US nuclear submarine collides with 'unknown object': there are wounded

Fifteen American sailors received minor injuries after the submarine collided with an "unknown object" while diving into the waters of the South China Sea. Writes about it with the BBC.

The USS Connecticut boat collided with the object back on Saturday, October 2. US officials said it was unclear what caused the clash.

The incident came amid tensions in the region over the recent rise in Chinese incursions into Taiwan's air defense zone.

A spokesman for the US Navy said that the submarine is now heading for the American territory of Guam.

“The nuclear installation and compartments of the USS Connecticut were not damaged and remain fully functional,” a US Navy spokesman said in a statement, adding that the extent of the damage to the submarine is still being assessed.

Why is the confrontation between the United States and China

The nuclear submarine USS Connecticut was in a region over which the confrontation continues. China lays claim to most of the South China Sea, but other countries and the United States disagree with their claims.

The Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam have challenged China's claims to nearly the entire sea for decades, but tensions have grown steadily in recent years. The United States supported many of these countries in a territorial dispute.

China is building artificial islands in the sea to bolster its position.

The American submarine incident occurred a few weeks after US, UK and Australia forge historic Asia-Pacific security pact... This treaty is considered an attempt to counter China. The AUKUS pact provides that the United States will share information with Australia on the creation of its own nuclear submarines.

Meanwhile, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said he was "deeply concerned" about the actions that undermine peace in the Taiwan Strait, which separates Taiwan and China.

His announcement comes after China has sent a record number of military aircraft into Taiwan's air defense zone for the fourth day in a row.

Asked if the US is ready to take military action to defend Taiwan, Mr. Sullivan replied, "We're going to take action now to prevent that day ever coming."

On Wednesday, Taiwan's defense minister said China could launch a "full-scale" invasion of the island by 2025.

Taiwan sees itself as an independent state, while China sees the island as a rebellious province that must be returned by force if necessary.
