According to the BBC, on Wednesday, the US Department of Justice and Education issued a joint statement saying that they had decided to withdraw and cancel the previous rules.

As the White House spokesman, Sean Spicer, said earlier, Trump believes that the federal government should not be involved in this matter and should be left to the discretion of the state authorities.

The changes made by the administration of President Trump have so far not affected the schools, since the Obama directive was temporarily blocked by a judge in Texas in August.

At the same time, activists fighting for LGBT rights considered the decision taken as a step backwards in protecting transgender rights.

“By stripping them of these protections, the Trump administration is jeopardizing the safety and security of some of our most vulnerable children,” said Randi Weingarten, chair of the American Federation of Teachers.

During the election campaign, Donald Trump somewhat changed his opinion on this issue. He initially said students could use the restroom of their own choosing, but then reversed his position after he was criticized by many Republicans.
