The nationwide assessment of the knowledge of fourth and eighth graders in mathematics and reading, which was previously scheduled for 2020, was postponed to 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic. It is noted that the changes that the work of educational institutions has undergone this year make it impossible to conduct an assessment properly and in accordance with the law.

“NAEP's assessments are key indicators of educational progress in the United States, with some trends tracking for decades. Changing work environments and lack of access to the students to be assessed mean that NAEP will be unable to provide assessments of student knowledge and skills that are comparable to past or future national and state assessments,” the National Center for Statistics chairman said in a statement. education, James Woodworth.

The US Congress Committee on Labor and Education has already noted the importance of conducting assessments at the state level. Experts explained that this data is needed to “best support students and educators as they recover from the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“For our country to recover from the pandemic, we first need to understand the magnitude of the educational losses that have impacted students across the entire country. This cannot happen without assessment data,” the Committee noted.

Woodward saidthat NAEP, before undertaking a large-scale national assessment, gives time for local conditions to stabilize. In addition, if the National Center for Education Statistics tried to continue collecting data in 2021 and were unable to assess student performance, NAEP would not only spend tens of millions of dollars, but, by law, would not be able to conduct the next assessment until 2023. By postponing this review to 2022, Woodward said NAEP is more likely to get reliable results.

In addition, postponing the next NAEP assessment to early 2022 will reduce the workload on schools this year, giving states time to conduct their own assessments next spring. To obtain comparable results, NAEP conducts each time in the same time window throughout the country. This was impractical in the coming year, as the incidence of COVID infection varies greatly from state to state.

The NAEP is scheduled to be assessed in early 2022.
