15 people injured by pepper gas sprayed on Hawaiian Airlines
On Friday, in the cabin of an aircraft heading for Maui (Hawaii) from Oakland, California, the pepper spray spontaneously discharged. As a result of the incident injured twelve passengers and three flight attendants who required urgent medical care, according to Hawaiian Airlines.
The plane landed at Kahului Airport in Hawaii, where the medical team took over the victims, said airline spokesman Alex Da Silva, quoted by New York Post.
One of the passengers illegally brought pepper spray into the Boeing cabin, which was carrying 256 passengers and 10 crew members. But, according to Da Silva, everything indicates that the canister went off accidentally, without the participation of the owner or other people. The airline was unable to provide any information about the passenger or explain why officials believe the gas leak from the pepper canister was accidental.
The crew of the Boeing 767 declared an emergency to receive priority for landing at the airport in Hawaii.
Passenger Nicholas Andrade said that he and his bride tried to take a nap in their seats, located immediately behind the first class, when this accident occurred.
“I was awakened by someone’s strong cough. When I woke up, I realized that not just one person was coughing - there were many of them, and later everyone started coughing, and so did we. Flight attendants started covering their faces, and passengers followed suit,” he says. “People were definitely panicking.”
Passengers had trouble breathing and began screaming. Flight attendants asked the victims to move to the back of the plane, where the air was cleaner. About 40 people stood in the back of the Boeing for almost thirty minutes until the air around their seats became breathable.
Andrade was among the 12 passengers who got the most. His head ached, others complained of burning and tried to wash their eyes.
A spokesperson for the transport security administration, Liza Farbstein, said that this agency and the Maui police are investigating this case. According to her, there was about 1,5 ounces (42-43 grams) of pepper gas in the tank. Farbstein says that a fine for bringing pepper spray on board an aircraft could be $ 1 960 or higher.
