San Francisco and Bay Area warns of dangerous air pollution
Because of the active Snell wildfire in Napa County, in the San Francisco and Bay Area, air quality has been severely affected.
According to air quality management (BAAQMD), “smoke from forest fires can affect visibility in the northern and eastern parts of the bay area”. The agency warns that if there is a haze outside, you should avoid physical contact. In the room it is necessary to close all the windows so that the air remains as clean as possible.
Wood smoke contains a mixture of microscopic droplets and particles and invisible gases that propagate downwind from a fire source. Surprisingly, most studies focus on controlled laboratory experiments or forest firefighters, which also occur under control. None of them reflects the real conditions in which Californians are now.
Wood smoke is a very complex air mixture, and most of its composition affects human health. Smoke comes from many different sources of fuel, including mature trees, dry leaves, forest litter and, unfortunately, local houses. Emissions vary depending on what kind of material is burning, as well as whether a fire is smoldering or burning.
The longer you are exposed to the polluting elements of wood smoke, the higher the risk of developing associated diseases.
Smoke tends to become more diffuse with distance from the source, but there is no way to estimate the safe distance at which toxic substances present no risk. Ultimately, the precipitations will clear all air from pollution, but this can take several days or even weeks. At the same time, these hazardous substances can travel great distances. This means that pollution can threaten those who live far from the fire, but in the direction of the wind.
The current AirNow EPA air quality forecast notes a more extensive air haze in North Bay, but the prospect of deterioration in air quality in San Francisco and other southern regions remains in place.
