In New York, the number of measles cases continues to grow: authorities close schools
The New York City Department of Health has ordered the forced closure of another school due to failure to comply with the city's quarantine requirements. The measles outbreak in New York has not subsided - the number of cases has reached almost half a thousand people.
The Department of Health reported that the 9 Central Yeshiva School of Yeshiva was instructed in May not to allow unvaccinated students to go to school during the 21 day after a known case at school, writes AMNY. This is the first school outside of Brooklyn, which was closed due to its vaccination policy since the outbreak in October.
The agency reported that, since October, 498 confirmed cases of virus infection have been registered, with 80% of cases living at addresses related to Williamsburg postal codes. This area has been in a state of public health emergency since 9 April.
“To prevent outbreaks in new areas of the city, we need parents to get their children vaccinated and we need schools to exclude children who have not received the measles vaccine,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot. “We continue to encourage unvaccinated New Yorkers to get vaccinated against measles as soon as possible.”

The school will be reopened after the Department of Health has reviewed and approved the submitted corrective action plan, which addresses non-compliance with the initial requirement. Since the outbreak of the outbreak, the city has closed nine schools and kindergartens. Eight were allowed to open under the supervision of the Department of Health.
The mayor's emergency order mandates that residents in four Brooklyn ZIP codes — 11205, 11206, 11211 and 11249 — receive the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine or face a $1000 fine.

Public health officials worked with leaders in the Orthodox Jewish community to counter false anti-vaccination rhetoric and to inform the public that the vaccine is the only way to prevent the spread of the virus that can cause brain swelling and death.
“Maximizing the number of people who receive the newest measles vaccine is the best way to protect our residents,” Barbot said.
As of 13 in May, the city has issued 98 subpoenas for people who violated vaccination orders.
