In New Jersey circus banned from performing with wild animals

Authorities in the US state of New Jersey have introduced a law that prohibits circuses from using wild and exotic animals in their performances. “Current Time” writes about this, referring to the law published on the website of state governor Phil Murphy.

“I am proud to have signed Nosy's Law and ensure that the exploitation and abuse of wild and exotic animals will not be tolerated in New Jersey. These animals should be in their natural habitat or in the wild, not on display where their safety and ours are at risk,” the governor said in a statement.

According to the statement, the law is named after Xozum's African elephant, Nosi, who suffered from arthritis, but was still forced to perform throughout the country.

According to an organization that opposes animal abuse, New Jersey was the first state to ban wild animal performances.

In 2017, a bill was passed in Ukraine that would completely ban animal performances in circuses due to animal abuse. Then trainers and many circus owners were unhappy with the initiative and said that animals are not treated cruelly everywhere.

Officially, performances of wild animals in circuses are completely prohibited in Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain, and several cities in Germany. In Bolivia, Greece, Denmark circus performances of both wild and domestic animals are prohibited.
