Cleaning up after Hurricane Harvey, a man became infected with carnivorous bacteria and died

Two months after Hurricane Harvey in Texas 31-year-old José Zurita died from a rare infection of carnivorous bacteria known as necrotizing fasciitis, which he most likely contracted during house cleaning after a hurricane, writes CNN.

The man helped with the repair of houses damaged by the elements, other residents of Galveston County.

October 10 Zurita was hospitalized with an infected wound of his left hand, and doctors diagnosed him with necrotizing fasciitis.

The man moved to the United States from Mexico to help his family cope with the effects of the hurricane, and also decided to help other people in the region.

The death of Zurita was not the first man’s death caused by carnivorous bacteria after Hurricane Harvey. In September, 77-year-old Nancy Reed from Houston died from necrotizing fasciitis.

Another man in the region also contracted this bacterial infection, but survived.

Although three people were immediately affected by carnivorous bacteria after Harvey Hurricane in Texas, infections such as necrotizing fasciitis are very rare. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 2010, every year in the United States, there were recorded from 700 to 1100 infection cases.

Necrotizing fasciitis is an infection caused by several types of bacteria that spreads quickly and kills the body's soft tissue, especially if the bacteria enters a wound that is not properly disinfected. The infection can lead to death within a short period of time.
