Employees of the closed Russian consulate leave Seattle

Russian diplomats - employees of the Russian Consulate General in Seattle (Washington), closed at the request of the United States - are leaving the city on April 24.

“We are now leaving the territory of the residence of the Consul General, which is the diplomatic property of Russia and which, at the request of the American authorities, we are obliged to leave by 23:59 local time on April 24,” he said.

The diplomat added that the embassy employees are heading to Washington, DC.

“We're leaving Seattle and heading to Washington. There are 11 cars in our convoy. A total of 23 people are attending them - diplomats and members of their families, including children,” he said.

Access to the premises where the Russian consulate general was located was terminated at the request of the American authorities at midnight 1 April. Within the consular district that served the Consulate General of Russia in Seattle were the states of Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, Wyoming, Utah, as well as Guam Island, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands. Now, on all matters related to consular actions, the Russians in these states will have to contact the consular department of the Russian Embassy in Washington, as well as the country's general consulate in New York and Houston (Texas). Thus, no Russian consulate is currently operating on the west coast of the United States.

The reason for the regular expulsion of Russian diplomats from the United States was poisoning in the UK of the former Russian intelligence officer-defector Sergei Skripal and his daughter Julia, who were exposed to the Novice nerve agent, whose manufacturing formula is known only in Russia.
