New York schools banned from working with immigration officers
New York Mayor Bill De Blasio said that in order to protect immigrant students, the city’s schools would not allow immigration officers without a warrant issued by the court.
This will be another city step to protect illegal immigrants, reports UFT.
“Our schools are responsible not only for educating children, but also for protecting them,” De Blasio said.
He added that so far no immigration agent had tried to enter the city’s schools, but the New York administration still developed a protocol of action for school management in case of such visits.
The document enters into force immediately and instructs school guards not to let representatives of the Immigration and Customs Control Service into the school building without a warrant issued by the court. In the event of a warrant, officers will be asked to wait outside the building until the school staff consult with the city lawyers.
The Department of Education, which does not collect data on the immigration status of students, will not pass on any information to the immigration services, unless the request is based on a court decision.
The city administration also conducts seminars in schools throughout the city to educate students, parents, and staff about the rights of immigrants in New York.
De Blasio’s decision became part of a nationwide Immigration Day, during which 60 cities adopted a similar policy for their school systems.
