Family roots and Donald Trump surname

The family history of the elected President of the United States Donald Trump is one of the many success stories of immigrants in America.

Its story began 130 years ago when Frederick Trump immigrated to America at the age of 16 years from his native Germany, disembarking from a steamer in New York, writes Share America.

“The first step on the road to Donald Trump we know today was that his grandfather did not want to be a winemaker,” said Trump biographer Gwend Blair, referring to Friedrich Trump’s exit from the family winemaking business in Kalstadt (Germany).

In his 2004 book Trump: Think Like a Billionaire, the construction magnate notes that his paternal lineage can be traced back to 1608 to a German lawyer named Hanns Drumpff.

“One of my ancestors, a winemaker, changed their last name to Trump in the late 1600s. I think this is a good decision, because the Drumpff Towers trademark does not sound as impressive,” the billionaire wrote.

Frederick Trump worked as a barber in Lower East Side in Manhattan, then collected his savings and moved to Seattle at the age of 21. In 30 years he opened a restaurant and hotel Arctic in the Canadian province of British Columbia during the gold rush on the Klondike. Later he returned to New York, where he managed hotels and invested in real estate.

Donald Trump's father, Fred, continued managing real estate business after Friedrich’s death in 1918. Donald Trump came to the same business as a young man.

“I always wanted to do this. I followed in the footsteps of my father from a very young age ... I was always attracted to construction and development, ”said Donald Trump.

The mother of the elected president before marriage was called Mary MacLeod. She was the daughter of a fisherman from isolated Hebrides in Scotland. She moved to America, met Trump's father and became a New York socialite, engaging in numerous charity initiatives.

“Looking back, I now understand that my ability to draw attention to myself to some extent came to me from my mother,” wrote Trump in his book “The Art of the Deal”, published in 1987 year.

He said that his mother “was deeply impressed by the pomp and solemnity of the ceremony” of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, which she watched on television.

“She always had a penchant for drama and grandiosity,” Trump admitted.
