Israeli PM calls UN 'house of lies'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the United Nations "house of lies" before Thursday’s vote on the draft resolution, which calls on the United States to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“The State of Israel categorically rejects this vote even before (it begins),” Netanyahu said in a speech at a hospital in the port city of Ashdod.

Creating outrage from the Palestinians and the Arab and Muslim world and the anxiety of Washington’s Western allies, President Donald Trump December 6 dramatically changed the ten-year US policy when recognized Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.

Palestinians daily protested in the occupied West Bank and Gaza after Trump’s statement, throwing stones and burning tires at the security forces. Gaza fighters have also launched sporadic rocket fire.

Palestinian officials say eight Palestinians were killed by Israeli shooters during the demonstrations. Dozens more were wounded. Two militants were killed in an Israeli air strike in Gaza following a rocket attack.

Trump threatened to cut financial aid to those countries that vote for the draft UN resolution. He was supported by UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

Netanyahu in his speech thanked Trump and Haley for "their bold and uncompromising position." He stressed that other countries will eventually follow Washington’s example in promising to move their embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

“The attitude towards Israel of many countries, on all continents, outside the walls of the United Nations, is changing and will eventually penetrate into the UN, the house of lies,” he said.

Most countries view the status of Jerusalem as a matter to be settled as a result of a possible Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, although this process is now stalled.

Israel considers Jerusalem its eternal and undivided capital and wants all embassies to be there. The Palestinians want the capital of an independent Palestinian state to be in the eastern sector of the city, which Israel has controlled since 1967.
