Poroshenko wants to deprive Ukrainian citizenship for voting in Crimea

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko proposes to deprive the Ukrainian citizenship of people who received a Russian passport and participated in the election of the Russian president in the territory of the occupied Crimea.

According to UNIAN, the corresponding bill No. 8297 “On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine“ On the Citizenship of Ukraine ”regarding the improvement of certain provisions” the President submitted to the Verkhovna Rada.

В законопроекте предлагается внести изменения в статью 19 закона «Основания для потери гражданства Украины», дополнив ее новым пунктом «г» (приобретение гражданства Российской Федерации в результате совершения противоправных и недобросовестных действий на временно оккупированной территории Автономной Республики Крым и города Севастополя оккупационной администрацией Российской Федерации).

Также основанием для потери гражданства является «use by an adult person who has obtained the citizenship of Ukraine of an electoral or other right granted to him by foreign citizenshipor fulfillment of the duties that foreign citizenship imposes on it, which can be confirmed by the data of public registers of state bodies, local self-government bodies of foreign states, information posted on official websites, official publications of state bodies, local self-government bodies of foreign states, and / or documents provided by such authorities use by an adult person who has obtained the citizenship of Ukraine, a passport document of a foreign state on the territory of Ukraine, when leaving Ukraine, entering Ukraine, что зафиксировано должностным или служебным лицом Государственной пограничной службы Украины или другого государственного органа Украины».

Кроме того, предлагается забирать украинский паспорт у тех, кто получил гражданство Украины, и в течение 2-х лет после получения не прекратил гражданство другой страны: «невыполнение совершеннолетним лицом, получившим гражданство Украины на основании статьи 9 данного Закона, установленного для него данным законом требования о предоставлении в течение двух лет в уполномоченный орган Украины выданного уполномоченным органом иностранного государства документа о прекращении иностранного гражданства».

В отношении родившихся на территории УССР действующая редакция закона в ст 3. «Принадлежность к гражданству Украины» определяет, что «Гражданами Украины являются: все граждане бывшего СССР, которые на момент провозглашения независимости Украины (24 августа 1991 года) постоянно проживали на территории Украины». Президент предлагает дополнить этот пункт словами: «…и принадлежность которых к гражданству Украины установлена на 1 мая 2018 года».

Recall that in 2014, Russia held an illegal referendum on the territory of the Ukrainian Crimea, as a result of which the peninsula became a subject of the Russian Federation. Ukraine considers Crimea an occupied territory. The international community does not recognize the annexation of the Crimea and imposed sanctions against Russia and the peninsula. 18 March 2018, Russia held elections for the President of Russia in Crimea, which Ukraine considers illegitimate.
