Results of US local elections: Democrats take revenge

7 in November in the United States held elections for local governments in several US states and cities, as well as voting on some of the issues of regional development.

Information Agency AP collected a brief overview of the most significant election results.

Governors

Virginia and New Jersey voters chose new state governors. In Virginia, the victory was won by Democrats ’nominee Ralph Northam, who bypassed Republican Ed Gillespie. In New Jersey, Democratic Party spokesman Phil Murphy also won.

These elections became a kind of test for parties before the mid-term elections to the Congress in 2018.

Mayors of big cities

Democrat Bill de Blasio was reelected for a second term as mayor of New York. He confidently bypassed Republican nominee Nicole Malliotakis and several other candidates.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh also received the support of voters for a second term as head of the city.

A reelection for the second term ended the election for Mayor of Detroit Mike Duggan. His opponent was a member of the Michigan Senate Coleman Young II, whose father was the first black mayor of the city in the United States.

In Atlanta, Keisha Lance Bottoms and Mary Norwood entered the second round of the election of the mayor of the city, the next stage of the vote will be December 5.

In Seattle, former US Attorney Jenny Durcan leads the mayoral election, but the counting of votes has not yet been completed. Former Seattle mayor Ed Murray resigned at the start of 2017, amid allegations of sexual harassment.

Residents of Charlotte in North Carolina have elected the sixth mayor of the city since 2009. The position was received by Democratic candidate Wee Liles.

Medicaid

Maine's voters voted to join other states (they are now 31) participating in the social health insurance program. Medicaid. The issue of joining the program was brought to the court after voters, as the Republican governor of Maine, vetoed the attempts of the local parliament to expand the program on 5.

Utah Congressional Representative

The mayor of Provo in Utah, Republican John Curtis was elected as a replacement for retired member of the US House of Representatives from Utah Jason Shuffetts.

Philadelphia District Attorney

The District Attorney of Philadelphia was elected Larry Krasner, a liberal Democrat who promises to end mass jail sentences and abolish the death penalty. He will replace Democrat Seth Williams, who last month was sentenced to prison for taking a bribe.

Washington

Democrat Manka Dhingra leads the Washington State Senate elections, but so far not all votes have been counted. If he wins, then control of local power in Washington will be completely transferred to the Democrats, as in all other states on the west coast of the United States.
