Due to a glitch on the airline's website, dozens of travelers bought tickets for 20 times cheaper than the regular price.

Some travelers didn't hesitate and snapped up heavily discounted tickets to the most expensive destinations from All Nippon Airways after a currency conversion error. One enterprising traveler paid just $890 for a first-class flight from Jakarta to the Caribbean via Tokyo and New York and back. Bloomberg.

A trip of 14 kilometers usually costs almost 500 times more in ANA first class. Others bought business class tickets for just a few hundred dollars instead of the usual $20 or so. News of the outage spread across social media platforms.

Ticket error

All Nippon Airways premium seats were sold at economy class prices.

Two-way tickets Jakarta-Tokyo-New York-Aruba cost $890 instead of $16300. Jakarta-Tokyo-New York in two directions were sold at a price of $350 instead of $10400. The flight Jakarta-Singapore-Haneda-New York-Tokyo-Singapore cost smart travelers $350 instead of $8300.

19 April ANA Holdings Ltd. stated that the error was due to a glitch on its website in Vietnam, which indicated an incorrect currency conversion. The statement did not say how many people received discounted tickets, and said that "the cause of the error and the extent of its damage are being investigated."

An ANA spokesman initially said the airline would accept tickets for those who bought them at the wrong price, but the carrier later said a final decision had yet to be made, adding that one would be made before the end of the month. Discounted tickets will continue to be valid for people flying before this decision is made.

Most of the tickets were for travel from the Indonesian capital Jakarta to Japan and then to New York and back to various destinations in Southeast Asia, including Singapore and Bali.

Herman Yip, owner of a travel website, said he bought a first-class round trip ticket from Jakarta to Aruba via Tokyo and New York. Johnny Wong, who works in the airline industry, said he booked a business-class return ticket from Jakarta to Honolulu via Narita Airport in Tokyo for $550.

“I never thought I would get a deal like this,” Wong said. The 29-year-old said he felt the need to enter his details as quickly as possible to buy a ticket before ANA realized their mistake. The fare at the correct price is now $8200.

This is not the first time an airline has unintentionally sold premium seats at a deep discount.

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. accidentally sold first and business class tickets from Vietnam to the US in 2019 for only $675, when the regular price would have been $16. The airline has not canceled these tickets.
