The head of the CIA believes that Russia will try to intervene in the November elections in the US

CIA Director Mike Pompeo stated in BBC interviewthat, according to the US intelligence, Russia will try to intervene in the midterm congressional elections to be held in America in November.

According to him, the CIA did not notice a decrease in Russian attempts to influence the outcome of elections in the United States and European countries.

The US intelligence agencies have been declaring for a year and a half that Russia was trying to influence the outcome of the American elections in 2016.

Mike Pompeo almost every morning reports to President Trump on the threats facing the country.

“We have the best spy service in the world,” Pompeo said in an interview. with the BBC.

“We go there [overseas] and do everything in our power to get classified information that can help the American people.”

Mike Pompeo has only been in office for a year. According to him, his main task is to enable CIA employees to do their job without hindrance.

"Subversion" of Russia

Although the United States and Russia continue to cooperate in the fight against terrorism (last year, the CIA helped Russian intelligence agencies prevent the terrorist attack in St. Petersburg), Pompeo says he considers Russia rather a hostile country, and shares the fears of European intelligence services about the subversive activities of Russian intelligence services abroad .

“I haven’t seen them become less active,” Pompeo said.

When asked if he was concerned about Russian activity ahead of the November congressional elections, the CIA chief replied: “Of course. "I expect they [Russian intelligence agencies] will try to do something, but I am confident that America will be able to hold a free and fair election, and that we will be able to ensure that their efforts do not seriously affect the outcome of the vote."

According to Pompeo, the United States is trying to stop Russia's subversive activities. Some of this work is not the responsibility of the CIA, such as checking sources of information and fake news.

But the US special services are trying to establish who exactly is behind the subversive activities, they use different technologies to stop such activities, and they are trying to prevent Russian attempts at influence.

President Trump himself has never once admitted that Russia was trying to influence the outcome of the presidential election. But almost all US intelligence agencies are confident that Russia did it. Does this mean that Pompeo is difficult to maneuver between the president and the special services?

“I don’t tack. I’m interested in the truth,” Pompeo said in an interview. “Almost every day, I personally report to the President the best information known to the CIA.”

Pompeo holds briefings with President Trump when he is in Washington. Briefings address current policy issues and strategic issues.

Ahead of the president's meetings with foreign leaders, these briefings are aimed at giving Trump a "strategic advantage."

“He pays a lot of attention to information - he is interested in the facts that we tell him about. And he wants to understand why we think these facts are important,” Pompeo says.

North Korea

Donald Trump, unlike other US presidents, constantly uses Twitter and often uses very explicit language. For example, he called North Korean leader Kim Jong-un "Rocket Man" and boasted that his nuclear button was larger than Kim Jong-un's.

But Mike Pompeo believes that such statements helped convince the head of North Korea and other world leaders of the existing risks.

“Look at the words that the president chooses, many of them are close to them... I can assure you that Kim Jong-un understands that America is serious,” said the head of the CIA.

North Korea's nuclear program is a priority issue for the CIA. “We believe he [Kim Jong Un] will be able to launch a nuclear missile at the United States within months,” Pompeo said.

“Our job is to provide intelligence to the U.S. president that will allow him to make choices among a range of possible scenarios to reduce this threat through more than just diplomacy.”

According to him, the president and the administration of the White House are aware that a full-fledged conflict will lead to mass death and large-scale destruction.

Asked whether Kim Jong Un could be "taken out of the picture" before he launches his nuclear missiles, Mike Pompeo said "various options are possible" but did not go into detail.
