American newspapers sharply criticized Vladimir Putin after a British judge announced that the Russian leader “may have approved” the poisoning of former Russian FSB agent Alexander Litvinenko, who became a defector and actively criticized Putin.

Litvinenko was killed in London in 2006 year.

Commenting on the judge’s findings, the New York Times wrote that Putin “has built a disgusting reputation in the field of justice and human rights, which naturally increases suspicions of his involvement in this murder.”

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal called on the UK to impose tough sanctions against Russia and Putin himself.

“Immediate expulsion from the UK of all known FSB agents would be a good start,” the newspaper writes, adding that British Prime Minister David Cameron could enlist the support of European leaders to extend and extend sanctions against Russia.
