Who threaten cooperation between local and federal immigration authorities

The presidency of Donald Trump was marked by a tightening of immigration policy in the United States, as well as increased cooperation between local and federal authorities in immigration matters.

One way to ensure such cooperation is the 287 (g) program, the newspaper writes Immigration impact.

This document allows the federal government to cooperate with local law enforcement agencies, whose employees are entrusted with the functions of federal immigration agents.

The Trump administration announced its intention to scale up the program, despite the previously documented 287 (g) problems with ethnic persecution, the negative impact of its implementation on the relationship between the community and the police, as well as the inefficient use of resources. As of January 2018, 59 agreements have been concluded for the cooperation of local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities under the 287 (g) program. They cover three cities, 54 counties, two states and more 1800 law enforcement officers. The Trump administration said that the number of communities collaborating with federal authorities would increase significantly by the end of the year.

In participating communities:

• More than 1,5 million people live in mixed-status families.
• Most of the immigrants living there have been in the US for at least 10 years.
• In total, immigrant families living in these regions spend 65,9 billion dollars a year.

Most of the communities in the 287 (g) program are located in Texas and the southeastern states, but they range from urban to rural with varying numbers of immigrants living in them. In total, 10 percent of all immigrants in the United States live in regions that have signed an agreement on the 287 program (g).

Most of these agreements were signed in 2007 and 2009, just a few years after the arrival of immigrants in these regions. Most of the 287 (g) participating communities have a smaller proportion of immigrants compared to the average for the United States.

In many such communities, immigrants play an important role. For example, in Manassas and Manassas Park (Virginia) 41% of business owners are immigrants.
