Americans warn of fake and counterfeit flu drugs
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Warns Americans about fake or unauthorized flu drugs.
On Friday, 2 in March, the FDA issued a press release reminding consumers that there are no drugs for preventing or treating flu that are available without a prescription.
According to the agency, the seriousness of the situation with the spread of the flu causes new fears that consumers will buy unlicensed flu drugs or counterfeit antiviral drugs in illegal online pharmacies.
“We recognize that this year's flu season has taken a toll on lives,” FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in a statement. “As the flu continues to spread and even cause deaths, unscrupulous workers can take advantage of unsuspecting consumers by promoting their fraudulent products that have not been tested by the FDA.”
The flu season began in the United States in December, reached its maximum level in January, and then continued to grow again throughout the country.
Gottlieb on Friday warned consumers to "be on their guard" and beware of counterfeit drugs, which he said could be found on the Internet or in retail stores.
According to the FDA, you should pay special attention to over-the-counter medicines if they are:
- reduce the severity and duration of the flu;
- naturally boosts immunity without flu shots;
- are a safe and effective alternative to influenza vaccine;
- prevents influenza infection;
- effective in treating flu;
- provides faster recovery from flu; or
- supports your body's natural immune defenses to fight the flu.
The FDA also warns consumers to be cautious when buying drugs at online pharmacies that sell antiviral prescription drugs, such as Tamiflu, at reduced prices or without a prescription.
The agency urges you to buy prescription drugs at local pharmacies.
