In the Institute of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of France announced a radioactive cloud over Europe, which could appear due to an accident at a nuclear facility in Russia or Kazakhstan. He writes about it Associated Press.

According to experts, the accident could have happened in the last week of September in the area between the Volga and the Urals, south of the Ural Mountains, but the exact place cannot be established.

The institute states that information on the presence of radioactive substances is confirmed by data from other European countries. The radioactive cloud includes ruthenium-106 isotopes. The radioactive cloud affected "most European countries" and was recorded from September 27 to October 13. The maximum level of radiation reached in late September - early October.

At the same time with the 6 of October, the content of hazardous substances was reduced, and at the moment they are not in the air. The occurrence of ruthenium-106 isotopes "does not pose any risk to the environment and human health," the scientists said.

Ruthenium emissions could also occur due to the return of a satellite to the Earth’s atmosphere. But this version was rejected by the International Atomic Energy Agency. According to the ministry’s information, satellites operating in ruthenium did not enter the atmosphere during a specified period of time.

The rector of the French Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety, Jean-Marc Pérez, admitted that the incident in Kazakhstan could also be the cause of the leak. But in Kazakhstan it is denied.

The Russian authorities said they did not know about the accident on their territory. ” Also, Rosatom reported about the absence of leakage at its enterprises.
