'I saw a lot of blood': in Florida, a lynx attacked an elderly couple

The red-haired lynx jumped from a tree and rushed at the couple when they walked around the city in southern Florida.

Wildlife experts say that red lynx in the city is quite common, although most residents never see them. Attacks on humans are extremely rare, especially in densely populated areas.

“I've never heard anything like this,” said Carol Baskin, founder and CEO of Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, which currently hosts 20 red-haired lynxes and many other animals.

Jerry González, captain of the Lauderhill Fire and Rescue Service, said the attack occurred at 6: 15 in the morning in the undergrowth near the couple’s house.

Husband and wife, 71-year-old Rupert Fry and 85-year-old Eslyn Fry, were immediately hospitalized. Officials say the condition of the victims is stable.

Lauderhill police issued a warning to people in the suburbs of Fort Lauderdale to let them know situations and not get close to animals.

Rupert said a lynx jumped out of the bushes and attacked his wife. She received multiple injuries to her face and hands, causing severe bleeding. Trying to protect his spouse, the man also suffered.

Neighboring couple Veronica Wong told news agencies that she was one of the first to find the injured couple.

“When I saw a lot of blood and Eslin was sitting, I asked: what happened? In response I heard: a red lynx. "

Red lynxes live throughout North America. They typically weigh between 25 and 35 pounds (11 — 15 kg), and are generally considered single. They are easily recognizable by ears with a brush, spotty color and short tail.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and other agencies are currently investigating.

However, Baskin from Big Cat Rescue said that people in urban areas are not even aware that lynxes live among them. Residential complexes, she said, are especially tempting wild cats because of the litter that attracts rats and other rodents, and this is their favorite food.

“They do us a great service. And they do it quietly, not at all noticeable, ”said Baskin.
