The Battlecourt Massacre: 18 Man Injured In Mass Brawl In Florida

A Florida mall was blocked after a scuffle that began Saturday night was mistaken for armed confrontation, Orange County Sheriff's Office officials said.

Police arrived at the mall around 17 pm on Saturday, December 29, following reports of possible gunfire at the food court. However, it quickly became clear that the noise was not caused by shooting, but by a fight between a man and a woman.

Jenny Ochoa, 39, and Anthony Charles Manuel, 55, were arrested on charges of beating and disorderly conduct in a government office.

“It appears that no shots were fired,” said Joe Armstrong of the Orange County Sheriff's Office. “It was just a few chairs that crashed onto the floor.”

Orange County fire officials said about 18 people suffered minor injuries and 8 were sent to district hospitals.

"Everyone was running," said Joel Colon, 10, of Orlando.

Vivian Drago, who came from Brazil, threw her bags when she saw people running. She and her family ended up in different places during the lockdown of the mall.

“The store doors were closed and it became really scary,” she said.

This incident was not the first time that the fear of gunshots caused panic among shoppers in the halls of a shopping center.

In August 2016, several people were injured after bursting balloons in a new restaurant were mistaken for gunfire.

And in April of this year, one man was arrested for trying to distract mall employees and shoppers by setting off fireworks inside a Florida mall so he could steal a watch.

A Florida mall was unblocked about an hour after the situation was cleared up. Since then, it has been operating normally again.
