US citizens were mistaken for illegals, because they did not speak English

A woman from Montana announced that she intended to go to court to protect her rights after an immigration agent detained and interrogated her and her friend because they spoke Spanish.

The incident occurred on the morning of May 16 in Le Havre (Montana), writes The Washington Post.

Ana Souda said and her friend Mimi Hernandez went to the store for eggs and milk. Both women speak Spanish fluently and they exchanged a few words in this language while standing in line. But an officer of the border patrol unexpectedly approached them and asked to provide him with identity cards for women.

The court began to record the conversation on video, most of the conversation took place in the parking lot near the store. In the video, you can hear the agent answering the question about the reasons for the detention that this is due to their use of the Spanish language.

“Ma’am, the reason I asked for your ID is because I heard you guys speak Spanish, which is very unusual here,” the agent responded.

At the same time, the agent denies that his decision was influenced by the ethnicity of women.

“It has nothing to do with this. The arrest is due to the fact that you spoke Spanish in a store in a predominantly English-speaking state,” the law enforcement officer noted.

37-year-old Suda was born in Texas and has American citizenship, she lived in Mexico for a while, but spent most of her adult life in the United States. Her friend Hernandez was born and raised in Central California.

Despite explaining this to the agent and presenting him with identity cards, according to the Court, the officer kept the women in the parking lot for 35-40 minutes. Although everything ended well, the women were very upset by the situation, especially the fact that the incident attracted the attention of people who looked at women with such a look as if they had violated something.

Upon learning of the incident, 7, the daughter of Suda, asked if what had happened was that they could no longer speak Spanish, which further upset the woman.
