Knowledge of English will be mandatory for civil servants of Ukraine
Knowledge of English, in the future, will be an obligatory criterion when applying for public service. This was stated by President Petro Poroshenko during his address to the parliament on Wednesday.
“Proficiency in English will become a key criterion for admission to the civil service. I think this should be gradually introduced in the coming years,” he said.
The president also announced his intention to support the program Go Global, which defines the study of English as one of the priorities of the development strategy.
“Ukraine today remains among the countries with a low level of English proficiency in the global ranking. And this is a barrier to reorientation to Western values and standards. This limits our access to scientific research, which is 80% published in English.
55% of web pages are also written in English,” Poroshenko said. According to him, 2016 will be declared the year of the English language in Ukraine.
At the same time Poroshenko assured that the priority of the Ukrainian language remains indisputable.
