Famous immigrants: Hollywood stars we mistakenly think are Americans

You will be surprised, but many of our favorite Hollywood actors are actually immigrants, writes the author of the PRO LIFE blog on Yandex Zen.

When we watch an American film or TV series, we usually assume that all the actors in them are actually from the United States. However, many of our favorite movie stars were actually born or raised outside of the United States.

Jim Carrey, Canadian

Jim Carrey was born in the Toronto suburb of Newmarket, Ontario. His mother is of Irish-Scottish-French descent, his father is French-Canadian. And even the original family name was written in French: Carré.

Keanu Reeves, Canadian

Keanu Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon, where his English mother met an American-Hawaiian lover who became Keanu's father. When the boy was 2 years old, his parents divorced, and the mother and son left to look for a better fate. They stayed in Sydney for a while, then moved to New York and eventually settled in Toronto, Ontario.

Christian Bale, Englishman

The British-American actor was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales, but always says that he is not Welsh, but English. As a child, the Bale family lived in different countries, including England, Portugal and the United States.

Mila Kunis, Ukrainian

Mila Kunis was born in Chernivtsi, Ukrainian SSR. Although, according to the actress, her parents were not “poor”, they simply decided to leave the USSR, because they did not see a future for Mila and her brother there.

Michael J. Fox, Canadian

Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox was born in Edmonton, Alberta. Irish, English and Scottish blood flows in his veins. The Fox family lived in different cities and towns across Canada due to his father's work until they settled in Burnaby, a large suburb of Vancouver.

Matthew Perry, Canadian

Matthew Perry was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts to an American and a Canadian. Unfortunately, his parents divorced before their son was one year old. Soon his mother took him to Ottawa.

Bruce Willis, German

Bruce Willis was born in Idar-Oberstein. His mother is German, his father is an American soldier. In 1957, when Bruce was only 2 years old, his father was fired from the army and he decided to take his family to New Jersey, USA. It was here that Willis graduated from high school and played his first roles in drama classes at a local college.

Charlize Theron, South African

Charlize Theron was born in Benoni, a town in the Johannesburg region of South Africa. She grew up on her parents' farm outside the city and dreamed of becoming a ballerina. At the age of 16, Theron has been modeling for a whole year in Europe. She and her mother soon moved to the United States.

Colin Farrell, Irish

Colin Farrell was born in Castlenock. After college, he attended the Dublin School of Acting and appeared in television series and films. He “grew up” to Hollywood only in 2000.

Hugh Laurie, British

Most people think of Hugh Laurie as an American actor because of his famous role on the TV series House. However, he is not an American - the actor was born and raised in Oxford, UK.
