A Miami resident gave birth to a stranger on the sidewalk in the middle of the city

Stela Niznik was driving from yoga to work at her restaurant Chicken and the Egg on February 7 when she suddenly saw a woman in labor on the road, reports Local10.

“Usually, you set yourself up for the day and I said to myself that I intend to do something good for someone today,” she said.

And so it happened! While driving through downtown Miami, she came across a car parked in the middle of the street and a woman in need of help.

“The woman was pregnant and was wearing a dress, and I saw blood on her legs,” Niznik said.

She quickly stopped and called 911.

“So the lady on the phone asked me what I had in my car.” - says Niznik.

Niznik had her yoga mat. The emergency operator asked her to use the mat and follow her instructions.

“We need to see what is happening. Okay, so I look, I can see the head pretty well,” Niznik said. “I can see the baby's head and hair, the operator said, 'Okay, now I need you to take a deep breath and I need you to stay calm, you need to deliver this baby right now.' I'm on the phone and my first thought was that I didn't even sanitize my hands."

She was in the middle of Downtown Miami on the side of the road.

“With one hand I was pressing on her stomach, and with the other I just started slapping her legs, screaming at her like crazy, ‘Almost there, just keep pushing, keep pushing!’” Niznik said. “I spank her legs and eventually the baby just lands perfectly in my arms.”

The woman gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby girl thanks to Niznik, who decided to stop and help.

The child's father, a Haitian, later said in an interview that his wife was going to the hospital, but she started giving birth right on the street, and no one stopped to help her, except for Niznik. He had no words to describe how grateful he was for a girl who happened to be passing by.

“We don’t stop often enough to help. Perhaps things could have turned out quite differently,” Niznik said.
