Florida woman dies after fighting an alligator that tried to steal her dog

On February 20, an 85-year-old woman was bitten by an alligator while she was walking her dog at a nursing home in Florida. The woman has died, reports Insider.

A woman was walking her dog in Spanish Lakes Fairways, a community of St. Lucie, southeast Florida, where more than 55 people live, when an alligator grabbed her dog, according to WPTV.

She tried to save the dog from an alligator, which, according to representatives of the wild, reached more than 3 meters in length and weighed 315 kg, but the reptile bit the woman. As a result, the woman died. Her dog survived, but her condition is unknown.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim," the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said in a statement.

According to WPTV, a hunter was called to the scene, the alligator was caught about two hours after the initial call to the emergency services.

“It was a struggle. We caught him at the bottom. He never surfaced. He stayed down the whole time. We were able to hook it with a second hook so we could lift it up,” said gator catcher Robert Lilly.

The FWC said serious alligator attacks are rare in Florida, with an average of only eight unprovoked alligator bites requiring medical attention each year in the state.
