Residents of Europe massively buy medicines for radiation after the seizure of nuclear power plants in Ukraine by Russians
Eastern European countries took extremely seriously reports of the Russian military's seizure of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, as well as the fighting and shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, reports with the BBC.
No less worrisome was President Putin's order to transfer the Russian defense forces to a special regime of service, which include, among other things, the country's strategic nuclear arsenal.
Last week, residents of the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Poland began to massively buy potassium iodide and other preparations with a high iodine content in pharmacies, which are used to prevent radiation sickness in case of radiation contamination.
The radioactive isotope iodine-131 is one of the most dangerous decay products of nuclear fuel, since it tends to accumulate in the thyroid gland. To prevent this from happening, if radiation leaks, people in the affected area are advised to take a dose of regular iodine (stable isotope iodine-127).

Daily iodine intake for children
It differs significantly depending on age, but is the same for boys and girls:
- from the birth of a child to 6 months - 110 mcg (0.00011 g);
- 7-12 months - 130 mcg (0.00013 g);
- 1-3 years - 90 mcg (0.00009 g);
- 4-8 years - 90 mcg (0.00009 g);
- 9-13 years - 120 mcg (0.00012 g);
- 14-18 years - 150 mcg (0.00015 g).
Daily iodine requirement for an adult
For adults, WHO recommends the following daily intakes:
- healthy men after 19 years - 150 mcg (0.00015 g);
- healthy women after 19 years - 150 mcg (0.00015 g);
- women during pregnancy - 250 mcg (0.00025 g);
- women during lactation - 290 mcg (0.00029 g).
For adults, it is considered safe to consume up to 1 mcg, more than 000 mcg is a potentially dangerous dose. However, the same 2 micrograms in Australia are recognized as harmless, which already speaks of the ambiguity of the recommendations of even such authoritative organizations as WHO on the question of what is the daily human need for iodine and how much is really needed.
In Bulgaria, for example, more iodine tablets have been sold in the past six days than are typically sold in a whole year.
In Poland, the number of pharmacies selling iodine has slightly more than doubled over the same period.
