Portland resident tried to bribe immigration police to deport ex-wife
48-year-old Antonio Osvaldo Burgos from Portland, Oregon, three times attempted to bribe an officer of the US Immigration and Customs Police to assist in the deportation of his ex-wife and her daughter from the United States.
The man first appeared before a federal court on Friday, writes Katu. He is accused of three attempts at bribing an official. The authorities claim that Burgos tried to pay the immigration police officer three times.
According to court documents, the man offered 31 in May and made a promise to pay the deportation officer 3 thousands of dollars. Six days later, on June 5, he allegedly repeated his sentence. The next day, June 6, according to the documents, he nevertheless paid the 2 officer thousands of dollars and promised to give the same amount.
The motives of Burgos are unclear. It is known that his wife filed for divorce on May 21, ten days before his first contact with immigration services and offering a bribe to an official. In divorce documents, the reason is called “irreconcilable differences between the parties, as a result of which marriage is irreparably damaged.”
Antonio Osvaldo Burgos met his future wife in El Salvador a few years ago, the wedding took place in 2015 year. The woman has a daughter from a previous marriage.
Friends of the offender told reporters they were shocked to learn of the charges. They also reported that Burgos is a legal US citizen and has an official job. He has no criminal history. Following his arrest, the man was released pending trial, which is scheduled for August 28. Lawyers for his ex-wife declined to comment on the incident.
