Zelensky and the 'brave people of Ukraine' nominated for the Sakharov Prize - the scientist who created the hydrogen bomb

The Brave People of Ukraine and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky were among the contenders for the Andrei Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, the EU's top human rights award. The edition told in more detail Radio Liberty.

The list of those nominated for the award was announced by the European Parliament on 12 October.

Nominees are nominated by factions and groups of deputies. Zelensky and the citizens of Ukraine received several nominations at once with slightly different wording. The deputies note the courage of Ukrainians in the face of Russian aggression and their commitment to European values.

The candidacy of the President of Ukraine was put forward by a faction of European conservatives and reformists, calling Zelensky "the face of the Ukrainian people."

The largest faction of the European People's Party proposed to award the prize to the "brave people of Ukraine", represented by Volodymyr Zelensky. Two other parties that are part of the coalition that formed the European Commission - Renewing Europe and the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats - nominated the "people of Ukraine", and a number of organizations and people were named as its representatives, including the State Emergency Service, paramedic Yulia Paevskaya, Ivan Fedorov, the former mayor of Melitopol before the Russian occupation.

Among those nominated by other political forces are the founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, who is in a British prison, the Colombian Truth Commission, Brazilian activist Sonia Guajajara and Al Jazeera journalist Shirin Abu Akle, who was killed in the West Bank of the Jordan.

The winner will be announced on October 19, and the awards ceremony will take place on December 14. Last year, the laureate of the award was the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is in prison. The award in Strasbourg was received by his associates and his daughter.

Who is Andrey Sakharov

Andrei Sakharov is a Soviet theoretical physicist, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, public figure, dissident and human rights activist.

He is one of the creators of the first Soviet hydrogen bomb.

In 1948, he was enrolled in a special group, and until 1968 the scientist worked in the development of thermonuclear weapons, participated in the design and development of the first Soviet hydrogen bomb according to the scheme called "Sakharov's puff".

As a result, he became one of the creators of the most powerful nuclear bomb of the USSR and the planet, called the Tsar Bomba. It is the most powerful explosive device manufactured in the history of mankind. The bomb is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most powerful thermonuclear device ever tested.

At the same time, Sakharov, together with I. E. Tamm, carried out pioneering work on a controlled thermonuclear reaction in 1950-1951. In 1950, they put forward the idea of ​​implementing a controlled thermonuclear reaction for energy purposes using the principle of plasma magnetic thermal insulation. Sakharov and Tamm considered, in particular, the toroidal configuration in stationary and non-stationary versions (today it is considered one of the most promising).

He advocated the deployment of nuclear charges of 100 megatons each along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States. And with aggression against the USSR, it was enough to press a button. According to Sakharov's calculations, as a result of the explosion of such a bomb, a giant tsunami wave is formed, destroying everything on the coast.

Since the late 1940s, Andrei Sakharov, together with Yu. B. Khariton, were participants in Project-627, a secret plan to build a nuclear submarine.

However, he soon changed his views. Since the late 1950s, the academician has actively advocated an end to nuclear weapons testing. He contributed to the conclusion of the Moscow Treaty on a test ban in three environments.

Since 1967, Sakharov has been one of the leaders of the human rights movement in the USSR. He was under the supervision of the KGB since the 1960s, subjected to searches, numerous insults in the press.

In 1975, Sakharov was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the preservation of peace.

Sakharov is the author of original works in elementary particle physics and cosmology: on the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, where he connected the baryon asymmetry with combined parity nonconservation, experimentally discovered during the decay of long-lived mesons, symmetry breaking during time reversal and baryon charge nonconservation.
