Zelensky was able to unite Ukraine: election results

Vladimir Zelensky united Ukraine in protest against current politicians. As evidenced by the data on the counting of votes received from the CEC, it leads in most regions.

“You can love someone and hate someone. But we must learn to accept reality as it is. It's very simple. Whether you like the choice of the majority or not, it is a choice. And by the way, this is not my choice. But I respect someone else's. If there is something false, then we know the way to get rid of it. Spring has come. No exacerbations. It's just spring. And everything will be fine,” the journalist added.

In 19 from 24 regions of Ukraine and in Kiev, voters supported the showman Vladimir Zelensky, writes DW with reference to preliminary data from the Central Election Commission (CEC). At the time of processing 99 percent of electronic protocols, 30,22 percent of voters voted for him. Current President Petro Poroshenko received only 15,92 percent of the vote and is in the lead in only two regions: Lviv and Ternopil. In the Donetsk and Lugansk regions - with the exception of the occupied territories - the self-nominated candidate, former member of the Party of Regions Yuriy Boyko, wins.

Svetlana Kononchuk, executive director of the Ukrainian Independent Center for Political Studies, believes that this is the company's response to the current president, who for five years in power has not been able to establish a dialogue with this society and has not fulfilled its promises.

“Zelensky has really united the country now. Ever since the Maidan, there remains a public demand for honest government and equality for everyone in the legal system. With his brand “Servant of the People,” he definitely fell into this public demand,” says Kononchuk.

Young people came and voted for their

The greatest influence on the outcome of these elections was played by young people, sociologists say. Despite the fact that most analysts did not expect high activity of young voters in the elections, they came and voted for their candidate.

“Everyone expected that much fewer young people would come, but enough of them came for Zelensky to win in the first round. They had a clearly defined candidate, so these are the results they should have,” Vladimir Paniotto, general director of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, one of the three companies that conducted the national exit poll on March 31, told DW.

“If voter turnout had been low, then Yulia Tymoshenko would have had a chance to get into the second round. However, it turned out differently,” Paniotto noted. According to the Central Election Commission, more than 63 percent of voters voted on Sunday. Paniotto added that approximately the same number of women and men took part in the vote.

Abroad without surprises

However, Poroshenko supported the majority of Ukrainians abroad. According to the counting of votes within a foreign constituency, at the time of processing more than 98% of the protocols of the current president of Ukraine, almost 38,6% of voters supported. Vladimir Zelensky in overseas constituency enlisted the support of 26,14% of voters.

Svetlana Kononchuk considers this result to be expected, since foreign Ukrainians see the advantages of following European values ​​and the Western way of life and associate this with Petro Poroshenko, who relied specifically on cooperation with the EU and NATO. “People want Ukraine to move in the vector of those countries where they are temporarily located or live,” says the expert. At the same time, she notes that if Ukrainians in Russia had the opportunity to vote, the election results in the foreign district would have been different.

Army voted disloyally

But the biggest mystery was how the military would vote, in particular, in the east of Ukraine. They chose the president and their commander in chief at the special stages. In total, there were 79 in the area of ​​the Combined Forces Operations (EP) in the Donbass and one at the Yavoriv training ground in the Lviv region. Vladimir Paniotto explains that because of the specifics of their work, the military did not get into the research of sociologists. In addition, the national exit poll was not conducted on these special stages, so no one had even expected results, as the army would vote.

Now the Central Election Commission says that in the zone of Joint Forces Operations (JFO), the distribution of votes in the presidential elections in Ukraine can be compared with data for the country. “All polling stations located in the demarcation zone and special polling stations organized for military personnel of the joint forces have already voted, the votes have been counted, and in most cases the results have been transmitted. There is nothing extraordinary in these areas. There are two undisputed leaders in these areas, as well as throughout Ukraine,” said Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission Yevgeny Radchenko at a briefing on Monday. There is no official data yet on which of the candidates - Poroshenko or Zelensky - wins the special stages.
