Statement of the American Jewish Congress on the parliamentary elections in Austria

The American Jewish Congress issued a statement in response to the Austrian parliamentary elections.

The American Jewish Congress expresses deep concern that in the yesterday's parliamentary elections in Austria, the far-right Freedom Party, headed by Heinz-Christian Strache, received more than 25% of votes.

These are the most impressive results in Europe among the far-right parties since the Second World War, which lead the party with anti-Semitic history to the second largest political bloc in Austria.

We congratulate Sebastian Kurtz, the head of the center-right Austrian People’s Party, who will now become chancellor, and urge him to form a coalition of centrist parties. Parties with xenophobic and intolerant views should not be allowed into the mainstream of European politics.

Trends in Europe should concern Jewish communities around the world, including in the United States. The rapid renaissance of the extreme right in Europe, which occurred this week in Austria, may be due to the more widespread intolerance of Jews and other denominations.

However, we remember our tragic story, filled with hostility and hatred. This is the case when ultra-right groups in the US are encouraged by the success of the European far-right, which poses a serious and immediate threat to the Jewish community, as well as to any US citizen who is committed to the principles of freedom, democracy and justice.
