Making money from a hobby: three inspiring stories from US residents

A side hustle can be an important source of extra income, especially if it's based on your interests or skills. Entrepreneur told three inspiring stories about successful “home-based” business projects that brought ordinary people more than $20 a month.

If you're looking to start a high-income side hustle, you're not alone. Nearly two in five, or 39%, of American adults have a side hustle to supplement their income and pay essential bills, according to a recent Bankrate survey.

But where to start? You may want to consider a part-time job that matches your interests or talents. For example, one teacher turned her passion for education into a lucrative online job, while another 26-year-old's obsession with ChatGPT led to a "simple" $4000-a-month side hustle.

Of course, creating a successful side hustle is easier said than done. But millions of Americans do it and can provide invaluable insight and secrets when it comes to managing their own business ventures.

Crickets

Jeff Neil runs a cricket farming side business, Critter Depot, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

“First, find the product and how to get it,” says Neal. - Don't waste time, money and energy creating a website and marketing it without first knowing what product you are going to sell and where you are going to get it. Also, pay attention to what skills you acquire when you start a part-time job. Many side hustles fail, and that's okay. You'll learn many business skills while trying to earn a side hustle, and these skills can be transferred to your full-time job. And this in turn can help you move up the career ladder. So don't worry about your side hustle falling through. You can learn a lot from failure.”

Teaching

Tara Laczynski earns about $150 a year working 000 hours a week. She teaches on Outschool, a live online learning platform for children.

“You can find a way to turn your passion into a paycheck,” Laczynski says. “When you enjoy what you do, it’s contagious.” Focus on doing everything right, scaling organically, and staying consistent with your product. You have to maintain quality customer service whether you have one customer or a hundred. The key is to maintain a growth mindset. You have to constantly grow and learn, so seek out experts and be open to support.”

“Be consistent and sincere,” Skjoldal says. — Network with everyone you can, especially those outside your “niche” or business industry. I've learned a lot from those outside of my industry and found unique ways to apply their advice to my own business and niche. I also found that scrolling through social media feeds only limited my creativity and inspiration. The less I scroll, the more creative I become and the better my content and business. Never rely on one source of income. Find many ways to profit from anything. And most importantly, work smarter, not harder.”
