Congress demands to publish Trump's tax returns

Richard Neil, chairman of the House of Representatives Budget Committee, demanded that the United States Revenue Service (IRS) provide President Trump’s tax returns for the last 6 years no later than April 23, writes Voice of America.

In a letter addressed to Charles Rettig, the head of the IRS, Neil warned that if the agency did not provide information before this deadline, this would be regarded as a refusal to comply with the lawmakers' request. Neil had previously requested that Trump file his tax returns no later than April 10. The IRS did not comply with this order.

Democrats want to get acquainted with the tax declarations of the president in the framework of investigating a possible conflict of interest related to the fact that Trump, even as president, is still closely connected with the business belonging to his family.

Donald Trump in 2016 declined to publish his declarations, thus violating the tradition that all presidential candidates have observed for decades. The President does not publish tax information, explaining this by auditing his declarations conducted by the IRS.

Democrat Neil is the only legislator in the House of Representatives who has the right to demand information on the president’s taxes from the Department of Finance, which includes the IRS. Under current law, the department is required to provide such information at the request of the head of the budget committee of the lower house of Congress.

The White House, however, refuses to hand over these documents to the Democrats.

• Recall Democrats have long been trying to get official information about the taxes of the president. According to The New York Times, in October last year, Trump received from his father’s real estate company at least 413 million for assistance in avoiding taxation in the United States.
• Last year, a petition demanding the release of Trump's tax return scored more than 620 thousands of signatures. Note that every US presidential candidate has published its tax returns since 1976, but the law does not require this.
