Stewards Mesa Airlines explained that when the seat back is not in a strictly upright position, the seat is unlocked. In the event of an emergency, such a seat can injure passengers.

“Everything we do in aviation is based on effective evacuation,” said Candace Colander, aviation safety coordinator for the Association of Flight Engineers. — There is a path that people don’t think about: from the window to the aisle.

The reclining seat can cause problems with this way of evacuating passengers: people will have to waste time in order to squeeze through. And in the event of a catastrophe, the count goes on for seconds.

Keeping the seats in a vertical position during takeoff and landing also gives the cabin crew a better view, so that in the event of a fire, for example, they can see it more quickly.
