For resisting the police: in Russia, an American student was imprisoned for 9 years

An American student is accused of resisting police arrest. The US Ambassador to Moscow criticized the evidence on the basis of which the guy was sent to jail. The convict himself denies his guilt. The edition writes about it «Radio Svoboda».

What happened

An American student from Texas Trevor Reed was sentenced to 9 years in a general regime colony by the Golovinsky Court in Moscow. The investigation assures that in the summer of last year, being intoxicated, he resisted the police during the arrest.

In particular, a 28-year-old US citizen was found guilty of using violence against police officers, dangerous to life and health (part 2 of article 318 of the Criminal Code). The maximum sentence under this article is 10 years in prison.

According to the investigation, the incident took place on August 16, 2019. The police received a message that near a house in the north of Moscow, a man is arguing with two women. The police arrived at the scene and tried to calm him down, but he showed aggression and resisted them, it follows from the plot of the criminal case.

Therefore, the police forced him into a service car and took him to the OVD in the Levoberezhny district of Moscow. According to investigators, on the way to the department, the detainee attacked the driver, tearing his uniform, and also hit his partner.

When he was taken to the department, it turned out that the detainee was a native of Texas, Trevor Reed. The next day after the arrest, the court arrested the American.

Theater of the Absurd

In court, the detainee said that he did not admit his guilt. He claims that he does not remember what happened because he was drunk.

The prosecutor requested nine years and eight months in prison for him.

US Ambassador to Moscow John Sullivan called Reed's sentence a "theater of the absurd." “Today, American citizen Trevor Reed was convicted and sentenced to 9 years in prison based on evidence so ridiculous that even the judge laughed at it when sentencing. It was a theater of the absurd,” Sullivan said in a statement.
