More than 13 illegal immigrants crossed the US border in Texas last week

A huge group of hundreds of illegal immigrants poured through the southern border in Texas. It has become one of the largest groups to flood the US in recent months, and another indication of the historic crisis facing authorities on the southern border. Smugglers, often referred to as coyotes, have carried out hundreds of illegal river crossings in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Federal sources said there were 12 illegal crossings in the Del Rio sector on July 2258 alone. Over a seven-day period, their number was more than 13.

The staggering numbers give a glimpse of a crisis that shows no signs of slowing down.

More than 239 immigrant encounters took place in May alone. The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has not yet released data for June.

The crisis escalated shortly after the administration of US President Joe Biden took office in early 2021, and has seen a consistently high level since then. Republicans blame the administration for abandoning Donald Trump-era policies, as well as narrowing domestic enforcement policies and calling for Democrat amnesty for illegal immigrants.

The Biden administration has focused its actions on addressing the "root causes" such as poverty, violence and climate change that it believes are causing the crisis. The White House also sees the issue as a regional issue and seeks responses from other countries.

Biden recently met with Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador. He spoke about joint efforts with Mexico to end human trafficking, as well as an operation launched in April to curb the smuggling of both migrants and deadly drugs such as fentanyl.

“Every country in the region needs to join us in tracking down this multibillion-dollar smuggling industry,” Biden said.

At that meeting, Mexico pledged $1,5 billion to fund border security infrastructure.
