Trump, the Democrats believe, has been pressuring Ukraine for months to get a politically motivated investigation against his opponent and thus ensure interference in the 2020 elections.

Those efforts are ongoing, Democrats say, pointing to Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani's recent trip to Kyiv, which Democrats say suggests "the threat of interference exists if he remains in office."

Democrats equated this with extorting bribes, which is a federal crime in the United States. Trump has repeatedly denied violations during this conversation and called him “beautiful” and “impeccable.”
