Yale University offers free tuition for families with incomes under $200,000.

Yale University announced a significant expansion of its financial aid program for prospective undergraduates, which will reduce costs for students and their families. The expanded program will cover all tuition costs for families with incomes below $100,000, according to Yale News.

The changes will take effect for new Yale students beginning their studies in the 2026–2027 academic year. They completely eliminate all expected costs for families with typical assets and annual incomes below $100,000, and ensure that families with typical assets and annual incomes below $200,000 will receive need-based scholarships that cover or exceed the cost of attendance.

“I am thrilled that Yale is making such a significant investment in accessibility,” said Jeremiah Quinlan, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Yale College. “With this announcement, we reaffirm Yale’s commitment that cost should never be a barrier for talented students to pursue a Yale College education.”

Since 2010, Yale has offered financial aid through so-called zero parent share scholarships. These grants, available to eligible families, fully cover all university-mandated expenses (tuition, room and board), as well as anticipated transportation costs, health insurance, and a $2000 starting grant.

In 2020, Yale raised the income threshold for zero parent share scholarships from $65,000 to $75,000, making more than 15 million American families with school-age children eligible for this aid.

With the threshold raised further to $100,000, nearly half of all American households with children aged 6 to 17 will now be eligible for a financial aid package that does not require parents to contribute to the student's education. And under the new policy for families with incomes below $200,000, more than 80% of American households will be eligible for a Yale scholarship covering at least tuition.

Currently, over a thousand Yale College students receive zero parent share scholarships, and 56% of all prospective undergraduates are eligible for need-based financial aid, according to Director of Undergraduate Financial Aid Kari DiFonzo. The average grant amount for all students receiving aid this academic year exceeds the annual cost of attendance.

"Yale makes a special effort to support students with the greatest financial needs," DiFonzo said. "In addition to generous financial aid offers, Yale provides additional grants for winter clothing, summer programs abroad, and unexpected financial expenses."

"From my personal experience as a first-generation college student from a low-income family, I know that the financial aid process can seem overwhelming," the director noted. "Determining a family's true ability to contribute to higher education can be challenging, but these new rules will make it easier for more families to understand their expenses."

Quinlan outlined other recent steps the university has taken to increase spending transparency. In October, Yale introduced a new online tool. Instant Net Price Estimator, designed to give prospective students and their families a clearer idea of ​​the expected cost of attending Yale in seconds. This tool complements the MyinTuition Quick Cost Estimator, which generates personalized estimates in under three minutes and has generated hundreds of thousands of cost estimates for potential students since 2018.
