Hackers hacked into a billion accounts on Yahoo: what users do

The company Yahoo reported the most powerful attack of cyber criminals. The attackers hacked about a billion accounts owned by customers. Experts call hacking the largest in recent times.

“Yahoo won the gold medal for the worst hack in history,” says Hemu Nigam, CEO of security research and consulting firm SSP Blue.

The company warned users that attackers could gain access to accounts, personal data and passwords. This means that owners, for example, e-mail can lose control over it. At the same time, analysts emphasize that the worst thing was that the hacking occurred back in 2013, that is, all these years the criminals used the imperfect security systems of the company with impunity and stole the personal data of customers.

How Yahoo clients minimize the risk of hacking

1. Use different passwords for online accounts. For each account that you have on the Internet, it is best to have a separate password. The fact is that even if you come up with a long and strong password for one account and use it everywhere, there is a high probability that it will fall into the hands of intruders, then they will quickly get access to all your data.
2. Do not respond to emails that require you to enter personal information. Hackers can mask emails as messages from the bank or from the airline. Do not enter confidential data. Hacking Yahoo mailboxes is dangerous because hackers have access to personal correspondence. Now they know, for example, about letters from the bank, in their fraudulent messages they can indicate your real flight number or bank account number in order to gain confidence and extract more information.
3. Block access to your credit score. The fact is that hackers, having received confidential information, often try to open a credit card on behalf of the victim. But any bank in this case will make a request to the credit history bureau. If you have “frozen” your rating, then when you try to make a request, you will receive a letter. This way you will know that someone is trying to issue a credit card in your name and prevent fraud. By the way, this is recommended not only for Yahoo account owners.

However, many experts believe that it is not necessary to shift all responsibility for the consequences of hacking to affected clients. After all, Yahoo users, like any other service, trust the company with their data and want to be sure that the company provides an adequate level of security.

“This is the second report of a hack in the last year. And I think this is a serious reason to think about whether it is worth continuing to use the services of this company,” says Schumann Josemauder, security director at Shape Security.
