Yahoo reported data theft around 500 million user accounts

Yahoo's Internet portal in 2014 was the victim of hackers who stole data of about half a billion users. In a statement, the company added that, in her opinion, behind the attack was the government of one of the countries of the world.

According to Yahoo, among the stolen information were personal data of users, unencrypted verification questions and answers to them, but there were no credit card numbers.

“Hacking and data theft by government-sponsored agents are increasingly common in the information technology industry,” the company noted.

At the same time, the statement does not indicate the authority of which particular country is responsible for the incident.

In August of this year, the hacker, nicknamed Peace, tried to sell data on 200 million Yahoo accounts, but the company did not confirm the burglary information.

Also in May, the founder of Hold Security, Alex Holden сообщилthat Russian hackers had perhaps the biggest cyber attack, which resulted in the stolen logins and passwords of 272,3 million email accounts.

According to Holden, the largest Mail.ru service in Russia suffered the most from data theft: hackers got information about 57 million user accounts. However, among the victims was listed and Yahoo, from which the system allegedly stolen data 40 million users.

Yahoo internet company acquires telecommunications company Verizon Communications. The amount of the transaction is estimated at $ 4,83 billion dollars.

It is not known whether the information about hacking will affect the decision on processing the transaction or its amount. The sale should end in 2017.

Yahoo's global audience exceeds 1 billion active monthly users, including 600 million active mobile phone users.
