'Worse Cold War': Russian diplomat appreciates relations between Washington and Moscow

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Ryabkov believes that relations between Russia and the United States at the moment worse than they were during the Cold War.

This opinion was expressed by the diplomat in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, writes TASS.

According to his estimates, Moscow and Washington are now "at a point that is much, much lower than ever."

“We are now at a point that is much, much lower than at any time after the worst days of the Cold War, because then we could to some extent predict how the situation would develop,” Ryabkov said.

According to the diplomat, events are now unfolding so quickly and unpredictably that a “situation in which the threat is growing” has emerged.

Ryabkov stressed that confidence-building measures can help improve relations between Russia and the United States, for example, stopping the practice of mutual expulsion of diplomats and closing diplomatic missions.

He added that Moscow considers it necessary to maintain ties with Washington, despite the existence of disagreements. According to the diplomat, Russia proceeds from the fact that “there is no room for miracles in these relations,” emphasizing the need to create mechanisms that could help reduce the risk of armed conflict between countries.

Ryabkov called on the American side to reconsider a number of cases in which Russians were sentenced in the United States to prolonged imprisonment. According to the diplomat, these sentences were issued for political reasons.

In addition, Ryabkov saidthat the United States is trying to nullify the dialogue on strategic weapons by groundlessly accusing Russia of violations of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. He ruled out new arms agreements between states “until the United States is ready for it.” He also said that he considers it unlikely that the parties will resume participation in the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty).

According to him, Washington is trying to find technological solutions to political problems, which is not conducive to dialogue between countries and nullifies it.

The Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia also denied allegations that Moscow sent the military to Venezuela to assist President Nicolas Maduro, whose departure is being favored by the United States. The diplomat said that we are talking about technical specialists.

“These are not combat forces, let alone special forces capable of autonomously carrying out individual operations,” he said.
