New York's worst landlords in 2017 year

Public attorney Letitia James on Tuesday published a list of the worst landlords from 100, who subjected their tenants to "unsafe and unsanitary conditions."

Parasites, mold on the walls and flaking ceilings are the main problems faced by the city inspectorate last year in apartments owned by these landlords.

“No one should have to live like this,” James said at a rally with tenants’ rights advocates in lower Manhattan.

James said that the annual list, which began in 2010, the predecessor of Bill Blazio before he was elected mayor, is effective in forcing some landlords to solve problems in their apartments for rent.

The public attorney noted that the six landlords who were on the 10 worst list were not there this year because they had solved all the problems.

“Shaming works,” James said at the Foley Square rally.

This year's list is headed by Jonathan Cohen of Silvershore Properties. He received 1090 reports of violations from the Department of Housing and Security.

Violations were recorded between October 2016 and October 2017.

In a statement Silvershore Properties states: “We have done a great job on complaints and expect that the number of violations will be significantly reduced after HPD inspections are conducted this month [Housing and Preservation]. ”

Silvershore faced lawsuits in the Brooklyn Housing Court, filed in July by tenants. They declare that Silvershore turned off access to heat, hot water, and gas, and ignored their pest and litter complaints, trying to force long-term tenants to accept offers to buy back, as the company sought to sell property. Silvershore denies these allegations.

2. Rachel Isaac; 969 violations in 214 apartments in 4 buildings.
3. Thomas Steiner; 843 violations in 320 apartments in 4 buildings.
4. Bruce Haley; 826 violations in 170 apartments in 8 buildings.
5. Eric Silverstein; 739 violations in 237 apartments in 3 buildings.
6. Adam Stryker; 734 violations in 177 apartments in 11 buildings.
7. Joel Goldstein; 721 violation in 209 apartments in 10 buildings.
8. Meir Fried; 718 violations in 131 apartments in 18 buildings.
9. Mark Tress; 650 violations in 20 apartments in the 1 building.
10. Robert Kashovits; 597 violations in 207 apartments in 4 buildings.
