Want internet from Elon Musk: you can already pre-order it on the SpaceX website

Elon Musk's SpaceX has expanded the scale of public beta testing of its satellite Internet service Starlink, saying it is accepting pre-orders from potential customers. Writes about it CNBC.

Potential Starlink users can pre-order Internet use on the company's website for $99. In some regions, Internet from Starlink will appear in mid-to-late 2021, in others - in 2022.

The service will be offered initially in the US, Canada and the UK.

The company's website emphasizes that pre-order fees are "fully refundable," but the fine print notes that "making a deposit does not guarantee service." SpaceX also says that "orders can take 6 months or more to complete," depending on where users are.

SpaceX began the Starlink public beta testing program in October 2020 with a service price of $99 per month, in addition to the $499 + shipping cost of the basic Starlink launch kit. The kit includes a Wi-Fi router and a user terminal, also known as a dish, for connecting to satellites.

Starlink is SpaceX's ambitious project to create an Internet network using thousands of satellites that should provide high-speed Internet to consumers anywhere on the planet.

Two years ago, the Federal Communications Commission approved the launch of 11 SpaceX satellites for the project. The company, which hopes to put 943 satellites into orbit by 4425, has already launched more than 2024. Starlink plans to create more advanced versions of satellites than currently exist.

SpaceX said Starlink has "more than 10 users in the United States and abroad in three months of beta testing."

Musk prepares to sell Starlink shares

The SpaceX chief executive echoed previous announcements that the company plans to conduct an IPO of Starlink when the service is ready for an initial public offering.

“SpaceX needs to get through a deep hole of negative cash flow over the next year or so to make Starlink financially viable,” Musk said. “Every new mass satellite launch company in history has gone bankrupt. We hope to be the first to not do this.”

“As soon as we can forecast cash flow well enough, Starlink will IPO (issue shares),” Musk wrote in a tweet.

Musk's statements echo those made by SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell early last year. She said at the time that “Starlink is the right kind of business that we can take forward and take public.”

The company is optimistic about the potential demand for its services and revenue and is confident that SpaceX will be able to overcome the technological challenges of creating and distributing the service. In 2019, Musk told reporters that Starlink could generate $30 billion in revenue a year, about 10 times the highest annual revenue he expects from his main rocket business, SpaceX.
