Hackers learned how to steal money through Word documents
Cybersecurity specialists discovered that attackers had adapted infected Word files to mine cryptocurrency, writes Lenta.ru with reference to the company VOTIRO Secured.
Infection of documents occurs by embedding a specialized JavaScriptcode containing the miner. After sending seemingly harmless Wordfiles addressees are connected to the cryptocurrency mining system Monero in favor of scammers. The process starts when you open an online video in a browser. Internet Explorer.
Cybercriminals need only place the video on the domain containing the script, embed it into the document Word and make a list of victims to transfer files. They use a bug in the design Microsoft, which allows you to embed videos in text files and at the same time has no restrictions on the list of allowed access.
So far, the existing scheme does not allow criminals to get rich quickly, as when the file is closed on the user's computer, mining stops. Experts believe that phishing content stealing passwords and software blocking equipment will soon appear in such a scheme.
Experts advised users to be suspicious of documents sent from unknown e-mail addresses. Recently, cases of capturing computers of ordinary users for mining purposes have become more frequent: hackers are embedding similar mechanisms in video on YouTube, in torrent services and in adult content sites.
