A Wisconsin man was sentenced to a year in prison for supplying equipment to Russia.
A Wisconsin man accused of smuggling lab equipment to Russian companies in violation of trade sanctions will spend next year in federal prison, according to Yahoo!
On October 7, Federal Judge William Conley sentenced 68-year-old Andrew Pogosyan to one year and one day in prison and fined him $10,000.
In June, federal prosecutors charged Pogosyan, a Russian-born U.S. citizen living in Madison, with smuggling and conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government.
On the subject: Russia has found a way to circumvent sanctions on arms purchases.
According to the prosecution, Pogosyan began using his company, Omega Diagnostics LLC, in September 2022 to ship laboratory equipment to Russian companies, including one that conducts chemical research for the Russian military.
In February 2022, in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the US Department of Commerce imposed sanctions on exports to Russia. These sanctions require exporters to obtain licenses to supply technologies and goods to Russia, particularly those that would assist the country in producing chemical and biological weapons.
According to prosecutors, Pogosyan did not obtain a license and attempted to conceal the destination of his shipments, shipping the equipment to third countries such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Türkiye, Latvia, and Lithuania. The products were then forwarded to Russian companies.

Pogosyan pleaded guilty to all four charges in July. He faced 35 years in prison.
However, defense attorney William Coffield said on October 8 that Pogosyan was a good man who did not understand the consequences of his actions, and Judge Conley found there was no evidence that the lab equipment was used for anything other than medical and environmental research.
