Because of uneven rainfall in different parts of the state, the blooming situation will not be the same everywhere. In Northern California, where there was more rain than usual, lush blooms are expected in the fields. But in Southern California, such places will not be as numerous, although there are corners where you can admire natural beauty.
Wild plants need plenty of winter moisture to thrive. But California's weather has been less than rosy this season. Since the start of the "water year" on Oct. 1, downtown Los Angeles has received just 166 inches (300 millimeters) of rain, well below the average of XNUMX inches (XNUMX millimeters) for this time of year.

(A water year is a term used in meteorology and hydrology to track precipitation and water resources. Unlike a calendar year, which begins on January 1, the water year in the United States begins on October 1 and ends on September 30 of the following year. This is because precipitation that falls in the fall and winter soaks into the soil, replenishes groundwater, and forms snowpack that melts in the spring and affects water supplies throughout the year. This approach allows for more accurate tracking of water balances, especially in arid regions like California, where most of the rain falls in the winter and the summer is almost always dry. – Note.)
This means that we should most likely not expect mass flowering of poppy fields.
“For a bountiful spring awakening, wildflowers need three things: seeds in the soil, adequate moisture, and several weeks of mild, cool weather with temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius,” explains botanist Naomi Fraga.
But don't be upset, because California will still have something to admire. At this time, other local perennials will bloom: monkey faces, phlox, sage, buckwheat and wild daisies.
