On December 14, the day after an attack on a Rhode Island university campus left two people dead and nine injured, a suspect was taken into custody. The New York Times tells the details of the tragedy.
A person of interest was arrested in connection with the December 14 shooting at Brown University, the mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, said.
Of the nine students injured and taken to the hospital, seven were in stable condition and one was in critical but stable condition and has since been released, Mayor Brett Smiley said on December 14.

What is known about the attack?
The shooting occurred on the afternoon of December 13 on campus during a review session before the final exam for the "Fundamentals of Economics" course, Brown University President Christina Paxson clarified on December 14. Students inside were either taking final exams or seeking a quiet place to study.
The shooting was reported around 16:00 PM. A warning sent out by the university instructed students and staff to lock their doors, silence their phones, and take cover in case of reports of an active shooter. Many students sought refuge in their dorms, while others hid in the basement of a popular tea shop.
Owen Fick, a third-year student at Brown University, said he saw armed police officers in riot gear running down the street and rushed to his dorm room for cover.
"There were a lot of ambulances, a lot of police cars, a lot of fire trucks," Fick said. "They had a lot of stretchers."
What is known about the person of interest to the investigation?
The suspect in custody is approximately 30 years old, said Providence Police Chief Colonel Oscar Perez. Authorities did not provide further information about the suspect on Sunday.
On December 13, authorities released a general description of the suspect: a man dressed in black. "He could be in his 30s, but we're not sure," said Timothy O'Hara, Providence Deputy Police Chief.
Police released video footage of the suspect. They say it's unclear how the shooter entered the engineering building, but they do know he exited the building from Hope Street. It's also unclear what weapon was used.
On the evening of December 13, the Brown University campus resembled a fortified outpost: more than 400 law enforcement officers swarmed the area. Some of them, shining flashlights on parked cars, searched for the shooter.
